Track: Shamanism and Its Potential for Modern Man
Is there a place for shamanism in contemporary therapy?
My talk is be based on the premise that the current paradigm of body / mind within the therapeutic fields fails to address successfully the rise in anxiety disorders, depression, isolation, powerlessness and other issues in the western world. The talk will argue that the materialistic world-view, as well as the de-connection from earth, community and the wider realm of ‘spirit’, progressively restricted human consciousness, deprived us of accessing deeper meaning, dis-connected us from our own inner soul-self, dis-empowered us mentally, and has led many into a state of being that is underpinned by anxiety, hopelessness, powerlessness and depressive tendencies.
The talk will then look at the shamanic energetic paradigm and world-view, and at the idea that the human being consists of spirit, soul, body and mind, embedded in - and connected to - the wider field. It will outline how this view can be incorporated into the therapeutic and offer concrete tools and approaches that can be transferred into contemporary therapy.
The talk will be based on my book ‘Shamanism and Spirituality in Therapeutic Practice’ as well as my experience with clients.
Christa Mackinnon (MSc, DFC, PgDhyp, FBSCH, MBAM).
I hold a Master of Science in psychology and am a family counselor, clinical hypnotherapist and shamanic teacher. I have worked as a psychologist, therapist, trainer, lecturer and trauma consultant internationally for 25 years, and still hold the post as an honorary teaching fellow at the University of Exeter in the UK.
My interest in spirituality and indigenous traditions have led me to apprentice to and learn from indigenous teachers in Asia and the Americas. I see my current work as ‘Bridging the Worlds’ between the ancient shamanic and the contemporary therapeutic and psychological. Based on my ground-breaking book about ‘shamanism and therapy’, I now mainly facilitate CPD courses and training courses for therapeutic professionals on the subject matter, speaks at conferences, and lecture widely.
I am the author of three books:
Shamanism and Spirituality in Therapeutic Practice (Jessica Kingsley Publishers 2012)
Shamanism: Awaken and Develop the Shamanic Force Within (Hay House 2016)
Shamanism Workbook (Create Space 2017)
