Education, Self-Actualization & Social Transformation
Social transformation is directly related to the number of individuals who are able to transform herself and inspire others. Such transformation is dependent upon one’s depth of self-knowledge, ability to direct one’s life, and one’s drive for self-actualization. The all important process of bringing individuals to that place where these three elements converge is far from mainstream in the world’s educational systems, which is the obvious area to begin this journey.
The focus of my lecture, as such, is the presentation of my vision of the kind of education that will bring about social and individual transformation. This vision is inspired by my engagements with a wide variety of studies and life experience on 3 continents, with the catalyst being transpersonal psychology.
Under this educational approach, teachers, parents, and school administrators would hold sacred the central task of shepherding each student’s discovery of her unique purpose, mission, and thus meaning in life. Through their studies, students would gain an unmistakable sense that the world is wondrous and that we are part of something infinitely greater. Students would come to appreciate their worthiness, uniqueness, as well as their shared humanity as to gain access to the transpersonal lens.
This educational approach will be instilled with the wisdom of the philosophical and spiritual traditions of the East, the West, the indigenous traditions, as well as with innovative modern interdisciplinary research.
Learning will be rhythmic, experiential, intrinsically motivated, cohesive and contextual. Balance would be sought between cultivating one’s highest ideals as well as enabling of one’s competent dealings with practical life. The subject matters taught and method of teaching may evolve with the times, but the focus of preparing a human being for her journey of self-actualization buttressed by deep self-knowledge and confident self-direction will always be.
